As the first generation of liberated mothers, it may be easy to think that our daughters will grow up in a world far kinder and more accepting of women. It certainly is better; however, evidence shows that our daughters are still being shortchanged – in school, on the playing field, in peer relations, etc.

After about third grade, girls begin to show a descent in how attractive they think they are and how much they like their bodies. Since physical appearance is so highly related to confidence, girls’ self esteem takes a nosedive.

Experts say females have 3 hurdles that challenge them as they grow up:

They live in a society that often devalues a woman’s contribution.
They are educated in a system that still favors boys.
They begin to gain weight and undergo physical changes just when appearance becomes the most important aspect of their self-image.
But what you do at home can go a long way to help. Parents must assume it’s their job to build their daughter’s self-esteem. That goes for any daughter, at any age!

When 3,000 kids ages 9 to 15 were asked by the American Association of University Women (AAUQ) if they agree or disagree with the statement “I am happy with the way I am,” there was a significant gap in the level of confidence felt by girls and boys as they matured.

Percent Who Agreed:
Age	Girls	Boys
Elementary School	60%	67%
Middle School	37%	56%
High School	29%	46%
So what happens?

School
According to Myra & David Sadker, Ed.D, professors at American University in Washington, D.C., who studied sexism in education:

Girls receive less attention from teachers in school than boys. Teachers tend to choose activities that appeal to boys’ interests.

Society
Society still discriminates against girls. You see it in magazines, movies and on the television. Women are depicted as having a lot less power than men. As a result, girls learn to suppress their real feelings.

By 11 years old, girls are aware of messages about the importance of being nice, kind, and always sweet.

Parents
Without awareness of this impact on girls, parents often reinforce these societal messages by praising their daughters only for how sweet or pretty she is versus for her good decisions, strong academic skills, etc.

Onset of Adulthood
The strongest influence in the decline of a girl’s self-esteem is the onset of adulthood. Since appearance is held to such a high standard in our society for women, girls want desperately to be thin just when puberty is causing them to gain weight. Girls become more self-conscious, feel less attractive, have more negative body image and have more physical changes than boys do.

The Importance of Role Models
One way to help our daughters is to expose them to strong role models. Talk with your daughter about women having options. Let her know that the most important thing to realize is that she can be anything she wants to be, whether a surgeon or a home-manager.

The bottom line seems to be that the more positive images of independent woman your daughter gets, the greater her chances of escaping the teen plague of self-doubt.

My doctor says I need more fiber in my diet. How much do I need? What are some easy ways to add fiber. I am a 28 year old woman balancing work and 4 toddlers.

Your doctor is right. Most people do not get enough fiber. The newest dietary recommendations call for women under age 50 to get at least 21 grams of total fiber, and those over 50 should aim for at least 25. Men under age 50 should aim for 30 grams of total fiber daily and for those over 50, at least 38 grams.
One way to make sure youre getting enough is to first check nutrition labels on all packages of grain products, like bread, cereal, crackers, pasta and rice. Make sure you do not give your toddlers high fiber cerals like All bran and bran buds!

Remember that vegetables and fruits also contain fiber. Since fresh produce is not labeled, estimate its fiber by counting two or three grams for each half-cup serving, but dont count on juice to supply
any fiber. If you eat five standard-size servings of fruits and
vegetables, and six servings of grain products (with at least
three of those whole-grain), you should reach the younger womens
minimum goal of 21 grams. Strategies to get beyond that include
boosting fruit and vegetable consumption even higher, choosing
more whole grains and adding bran products, beans, nuts and seeds.

Why not try the Fitness Heaven Fast and Fresh and Summer Slim meal plans? They are full of nutrition and fiber!

3) Exercise helps reduce symptoms related to seasonal allergies.

Yes, it’s true! Conditions such as hay fever and asthma can benefit from exercise. Since all seasonal allergies and some asthma-related respiratory conditions are allergic in nature, exercise has the ability to regulate the allergic process. Specifically, exercise has been shown to help the adrenal glands produce adrenaline and cortisol, which actually prevents or helps reduce the allergic response. Cortisol is related to the drug cortisone, which is frequently prescribed by physicians for allergic or inflammatory conditions. Look at that, you have an entire pharmacy of drugs produced inside your body and you didn’t even know it.

4) Exercise reduces the risk of developing cancer.

Cancer is essentially a disease of the cell. While the exact ontology or cause of cancer is not clearly understood, most cancers occur in tissue or organs that have frequent cell replacement. This process of cell death and replacement is a normal process that involves the existing cells rapidly dividing to make new cells. Sometimes, know one really knows why, the older cell that is dividing to make new cells is defective or damaged. This defective cell then divides and makes more defective cells. These new cells do not function correctly and just continue to divide and make more defective cells and what we call cancer is the result. Since these cells have no useful purpose other than to divide and invade other tissues and organs, left unchecked the cancer will take over the entire body causing many organ systems to fail, which would eventually result in death.

To make things even scarier, the damaged or defective cells that start of this entire process occur frequently in everyone, every day. What stands in the way of this fatal process is the immune system. A normal healthy immune system will detect these defective or damaged cells and quickly remove them. So, while our bodies are creating potentially cancerous cells daily, the immune system is there to protect us from them.

The good news is that research has shown that many cancers can be prevented by regular exercise. Colon cancer is one of the major cancers that can be prevented by regular exercise.

Another cancer of major concern, especially for women, is breast cancer. A cancer incidence that increases with age, breast cancer is also clearly lifestyle related. In a recent longitudinal study, 918 subjects aged 20 to 54 were followed over a 15-year period to determine the association between breast cancer risk and physical activity. The results showed that women who were more active than their peers had a lower risk of breast cancer. However, one interesting fact of the study was that women who exercised early in their lives (before 20 years of age) and late in their lives (within the last five years) had no reduction in breast cancer incidence. This demonstrates what I have been saying for years, a life-long exercise program is what will provide the most disease-fighting health benefits.

Well, there you have it. The benefits of exercise just keep piling up. I hope by now you understand that your body was not designed to be sedentary. We are made to move, jump and run. Lack of activity is the greatest killer of man in modern times. Our technology has made it possible to sit in one place all day. This fact necessitates that you take action. You are the one who needs to make a conscious effort to live your life to the fullest.

Many people feel they are living life to the fullest by doing whatever they want, when they want. Since exercise takes a measure of discipline, it is not seen as the best use of one’s time. And after all, why would I want to exercise to live a few years longer, it doesn’t seem worth it. Well, what many people don’t seem to understand is that exercise not only increases the years of your live, but these years are more healthy.

Exercise helps ensure that your health will be maintained during your life. If you think you will just live your life having a good time and then just die all of a sudden, think again!

There are currently millions of Americans living with chronic disease who thought the same thing. So, if you aren’t exercising, you may be heading for years of chronic disease and debilitation.

Exercise not only adds years to your life, but adds life to your years.

Just do it!

You have undoubtedly heard of the many benefits of regular exercise. Reduction in body fat, improved cardiovascular function and reduced blood cholesterol are all well-known benefits of exercise. In addition to these physiological benefits there are psychological benefits as well.

With all the benefits of exercise frequently touted by others or myself, am I going to present even more evidence that exercise is worthwhile and even necessary to live a long and healthy life? Yep! I sure am! There is no getting around the fact that exercise is the single most important activity that you can do to maintain and improve your health.

So what new magical benefit of exercise am I going to focus on this month? If the title didn’t give it away, it’s the elusive and poorly understood immune system. Your immune system is the only thing standing in the way of you and a disease. In addition, many authorities believe that heart disease and arthritis are also related to poor immune function. Without a strong immune system you are a sitting duck for any bacteria, virus, microbe, spore, mold, or med-fly that wants to set up shop in your body (I was just kidding about the med-fly).

So how do you maintain and strengthen your immune system in a safe and effective way? Yes, my friends, exercise saves the day again! Exercise is the one thing that can strengthen your immune system without the side effects of drugs or costly acupuncture treatments.

Enough with the prelude, just how does exercise help my immune system? Oh, let me count the ways:

1) Exercise stimulates the production of “T” lymphocytes.

In a recent study, a group of previously sedentary adults were followed to determine the effects of six months of moderate aerobic exercise on “T” lymphocyte and natural killer cell number and function. These subjects, most over age 65, were randomly assigned to supervised, three times a week, exercise programs. The results showed an increase in both “T” lymphocytes and natural killer cells for the exercise group, with no change in the control group.

One of the ways that exercise strengthens the immune system is through the release of “beta-endorphins.” These endorphins are responsible for the feeling that is commonly referred to as the “runner’s high.” Surprisingly enough, exercise stimulates the immune system by the release of beta-endorphins. These endorphins in turn stimulate the production of “T” lymphocytes from the thymus gland with natural killer cell activity. These are the little guys who seek out and destroy foreign invaders in the body like a virus or bacteria. Exercise actually increases the number of these “T” cells, which is a good thing.

2) Exercise increases the metabolic rate, which stimulates the immune system.

Another way that exercise strengthens the immune system is by increasing the metabolism. The most metabolically active tissue in the body is muscle tissue. Muscle tissue is, to a large extent, the determinate of the metabolic rate.

The more muscle tissue one has, the higher the metabolic rate. The good news is that exercise has been shown to increase lean body tissue (muscle tissue) and reduce fat. So magically, an increase in muscle tissue from regular exercise will also increase the body’s metabolic rate, even during rest. This increase in the metabolic rate, as a result of exercise, has been shown to have positive effects on the immune system.

There is good news for your oldest members: Researchers from the University of Washington’s Cardiovascular Health Research Unit found that there is no upper age-limit for receiving the heart-healthy benefits of consuming fatty fish, such as tuna, salmon and mackerel. Their study of older Americans found that people who consumed fatty fish just once a week lowered their risk of a fatal heart attack by 44 percent, compared to people who did not consume any fish. However, this benefit is lost when fish is fried, which is, unfortunately, one of the most common preparation methods.

Since the study began in 1988, approximately 4,000 volunteers ages 65 and older have taken part, and 348 of the participants were followed for more than six years to provide information on dietary fish intake. The study, part of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Cardiovascular Health Study, was presented at the American Heart Association’s 41st Annual Conference.

To ensure that your members receive the full benefits of this heart-protective news, encourage all of them, young and old, to follow the American Heart Association’s newest dietary guidelines, including eating (nonfried) fatty fish at least twice a week.

Propecia is exactly the remedy that really helps. Buy generic propecia and another products, they’re high-ranking quality.

Women may lower their risk of heart disease just by walking, according to a recent study. Researchers reported that the pace of the walk is not as important as the time spent walking when it comes to reducing heart disease.

In the five-year study, about 40,000 women ages 45 and older were evaluated based on their exercise habits. Researchers found that women who burned more than 600 calories a week through walking were about half as likely to have heart disease as those who burned less than 200 calories a week. Women who walked more frequently reduced their risk of heart disease significantly, and researchers affirmed that the time spent exercising was a bigger factor in lowering heart disease than intensity level. Women who walked an hour or more had about half the heart disease risk than women who walked less than an hour. The study also concluded that walking decreased the risk of heart disease in women who smoked or who are overweight.

Your female clients may lower their heart disease risk through a moderate exercise program, such as walking. Walking is an excellent way for deconditioned and out-of-shape members who want to reap the health benefits of exercise without performing high intensity workouts. Advise members to maintain their walking programs, for at least an hour per session, if possible, at a pace that is comfortable to them, to reduce their risk of heart disease.

Now that I have you thoroughly concerned (I hope), I will try and help you develop the tools you need to make a lasting lifestyle change. Understand that this is not going to be a pep talk, we are going to deal with the real psychological, physical and behavioral issues that keep you from making changes in your life. Don’t worry, I will spare you the psychobabble.

Step One
The first thing you must understand or believe is that exercise is necessary, and in fact, required, for a long and healthy life. It is this core belief that will direct and “empower” you to a healthier way of life. So, if my reality check at the beginning of this article was not enough, I challenge you to visit your local hospital and see how many people are there because of chronic (lifestyle) conditions. Visit these people to get the brutal facts about the results of a sedentary lifestyle. Then, come back and read the rest of this article.

Step Two
The next thing that you must understand is that your body does NOT like change. Any deviation from what we call “homeostasis” is stressful to your body. While excessive physical, mental, and emotional stress is destructive, a limited and measured amount of stress is very positive to your system. The prime example of this is a progressive weight-training program. As you lift heavier and heavier weight (hence the term “progressive”), the body responds by becoming stronger. In doing this you are actually forcing your body to become better, stronger, faster, etc. This is a natural process. Your body is designed to adapt to change in a healthy way. However, left to it’s own devices, your body will become sedentary, atrophy, decay, and die. That is why you have a brain, so you can take control of your body and require it to do things that it doesn’t want to do, for it’s own good. Sort of like making a child eat their vegetables; they don’t know any better, but you do!

Your body does not want to change; and every time you exercise, you force it to change, particularly when you first start to work out. Your body is not defenseless in this process. Science has started to discover the link between the brain and the body. In a nutshell, this is how the process works. First, you exercise and it “feels” uncomfortable because your body is not used to the stress. This physical sensation gets transferred to a psychological “feeling” or perception. In the future, every time you think about exercising you get this uncomfortable feeling in the back of your mind. This is your body not wanting to upset the status quo. The good news is that, over time, your body does get used to the stress of regular exercise and these negative feelings or perceptions diminish.

So now that we know where these feelings come from, how can we deal with them? In the beginning, it comes down to will. You need to take control of your body and make yourself exercise.

Fortunately, as you continue to exercise regularly, it gets easier. As with anything, the more you do it, the more it becomes a part of you.

Sometimes, though, your teammates are going to let you down. They will mess up a play, trip themselves up or totally blow the game. As a member of that team, you’re understandably disappointed and probably a bit irritated, as well. But try to keep in mind that everyone has an off day now and again. You’ve had them, too. It can be hard for all the members to synchronize their performances at the critical time and a thousand things can impact the outcome of the game or an individual’s performance on any given day.

At times like these, it’s tempting to hog the ball yourself. You might think you can do it better on your own and try to make the hotshot play to save the game or the season. As tempting as it can be, in the end it will backfire. Go back to the first section and re-read. Every player is on the team for a reason. Everyone has something to contribute. Even in a situation like this, you’ve got to let go of the ball. Pass it off and hope for the best.

But that’s not all you can do. When you see a teammate struggling, be supportive instead of critical. Can you see what the player is doing wrong? Maybe you can offer a few pointers. At the very least you can sympathize and help focus on the positives without beating the negatives — the mistakes that were made — to death.

Remember, you get that which you focus on. If you focus on the negatives and berate your teammate for mistakes, that player will only be more worried and probably downright paranoid about it the next time around. With all that focus on the negative, the chance for a repeat negative performance increases. That’s the last thing you want.

Instead, focus on the positives. Encourage your teammates, applaud them for a job well done and recognize them for their contributions to the team’s success. Recognize and acknowledge that you are all in this together and no one is perfect. If a player is having a bad day, help them rebuild their confidence and inspire them to do better next time. Getting down on them won’t accomplish anything. It will only lead to hard feelings and poor morale among the players.

Remember, together everyone on the team can work hard to accomplish more than any one of you could ever do on your own. So you may as well face it. You need each other. Everyone knows it, and it’s okay to say it.

Why not take a new player under your wing and help him or her advance to that next level. Work on the basics and help the player develop his or her skills. Share the benefit of your experience in the game. Give a rookie a generous dose of support. Your time spent mentoring a newer player will pay big dividends for everyone on your team — and together you can share the glory.
