More Room to Reflect
John Mayer, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of New Hampshire and expert in emotional intelligence, said that as people age they gain more mental space to reflect on and understand their emotional lives.

“As you grow older, you gain expert knowledge of your own emotions,” Mayer said. “You become more aware of what you feel and how to express it.”

Researchers in the study attribute this emotional poignancy not only to life experience, but also to what Carstensen calls the human ability to monitor time subconsciously.

“Older people know they don’t have the time ahead of them they once had,” she said, “so they prefer to find emotional significance that gives them immediate satisfaction in their day-to-day lives. They literally learn to live for the moment.”

Whether it’s pleasure or joy, sadness or pain, the knowledge that an experience will soon end changes the emotional experience itself, according to the psychologists’ report.

Life goals change with age, too. While young people pursue things that promise future benefit, such as learning new trades, meeting new people and moving to new cities, seniors tend to seek emotional relevance in the established facets of their lives. And surprisingly, achieving happiness is not their chief goal.

“Age does not entail the relentless pursuit of happiness, but rather the satisfaction of emotionally meaningful goals,” the report said. And this pursuit “entails far more than simply feeling good. Finding meaning in relationships, even conflicting ones, emerges as a central task in later life.”

Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, older people are less likely to think about death, Carstensen says.

“At some point you accept, both consciously and subconsciously, that you are not going to live forever,” she said. “In fact, many older people stop thinking about death altogether. Instead they choose to find new meaning in their lives.”

Sage or Crank?
But if emotional maturity sets in with age, why are seniors as often perceived as compassionate sages as they are cantankerous grouches?

“Just because they have a greater sensitivity to their emotions, doesn’t mean older people always choose to embrace positive feelings,” Mayer said. “There’s no question some people fall off the track and become fixed in a negative outlook.”

Carstensen says the two perceived models of old age — the sage and the crank –mostly stem from young adults’ limited exposure to older generations.

“Most people base their ideas of seniors on their grandparents,” she said. “If your grandparents were wise and reflective, that will likely be your model of all older people. Of course, the opposite is also true.”

Carstensen says her study will continue over the next several years. She and her team plan to reassemble the same 184 people for a second experiment. She hopes to show more evidence of the link between emotional maturity and age, as the same participants record their emotions again over the course of a week.

In the end, regardless of age, experts agree that emotional development is critical to contentment in life. While most people rely on achieving career or other “knowledge”-based goals for happiness, it’s human relationships and “emotion”-based goals that have the longest-lasting effects.

According to Carstensen, “successful regulation of emotion is central to functioning in interpersonal relationships, coping with life’s hardships, and optimizing mental health.”

So, take comfort: Whether you’re an emotional seedling or giant redwood, your emotions will only grow clearer, deeper and better with age.

Below are the 19 emotions monitored in the study: fear, irritation, boredom, disgust, accomplishment, joy, pride, sadness, embarrassment, guilt, anger, happiness, frustration, boredom, contentment, amusement, anxiety, shame, interest, excitement.

An internet store will present you with private and easy manner to purchase prescription, over-the-counter medications, frequently at a more affordable price. Online pharmacy are especially convenient if you do not drive, live in a rural area.

Fine wine and blue jeans aren’t the only things that get better with age. A new study says your emotional maturity also flourishes as time goes by.

Though your motions may slow down as you get older, your emotions rev up to new levels of complexity and intensity. That’s what psychologists discovered when they tracked the emotional highs and lows of 184 adults, ranging from age 18 to 94 years old, for a week.

The study found that while people over age 65 generally feel the same number of positive emotions as younger adults, they experience far fewer negative feelings. Moreover, seniors know how to bounce back from negative emotions faster than younger people do.

“We discovered that older adults experience a richness of emotions unlike anyone else,” said Laura L. Carstensen, Ph.D., vice chair of Department of Psychology at Stanford University in California and leader of the experiment. “An older person, for example, can feel intense satisfaction and sadness at the same time.”

On the other hand, she says, a typical 18-year-old can only feel overall positive or negative feelings at once.

Participants in the study were given stacks of “emotion response sheets” and asked to mark down how intensely they felt 19 different emotions on a scale from 1 to 7. The researchers gave the group pagers, and instructed them to fill out an emotional response sheet every time they were paged. They were paged randomly five times a day over a week. The study was published in the October 2000 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

At the end of the experiment, Carstensen and her colleagues had 665 emotional data points on each participant, with which they could assess “the frequency, intensity and complexity of emotional experiences in their every day lives,” according to the study. Most noticeably, people over age 65 ascribed more middle numbers to their emotions, while young adults generally ranked each one either at the highest or lowest end.

“Our older participants showed a higher self-knowledge, or poignancy, about their emotions,” Carstensen said. “While young people tended to describe a particular emotion as either on or off.”

To understand the effects of VR exercise, both the physiological and psychological responses are important. In these studies, even though subjects were working at the same perceived effort, they worked at a higher exercise intensity on the VR machines than on the non-VR machines. Psychologists describe this phenomenon as dissociation, whereby the subjects’ attentional focus is shifted away from internal cues of how hard they feel they are working. Because exercisers are working at a higher intensity, they should logically experience greater improvements in aerobic capacity and body composition if they regularly use VR machines.

A number of studies that have investigated attentional focus have reported that when external stimuli are present during exercise, subjects exercise either for a longer duration or at a higher intensity level than when no external stimuli are present. In a study by Pennebaker and Lightner,5 subjects were asked to run 1,800 meters at a self-selected pace on an outdoor, wooded track, as well as indoors on a treadmill. While no significant differences were reported in rate of perceived exercise (RPE) values, subjects ran 51 seconds faster on the outdoor course.

In another study, Ceci and Hassmen2 assessed the self-regulation of exercise intensity using an outdoor course and an indoor treadmill. Subjects were asked to replicate RPE values of 11, 13 and 15 while running under both conditions. When comparing running velocity, heart rates and lactic acid values between conditions, all of the physiological responses were higher for the outdoor condition, which was attributed to an external attention focus.

Psychologically, the simple concept of enjoyment often determines whether someone sticks to an exercise program. In the VR studies, results of follow-up questionnaires showed that subjects unanimously preferred the VR machines to the non-VR machines.

They also expressed greater enjoyment with the interactive nature of the VR equipment, and found that being distracted during exercise made the exercise feel less tiring and the time pass more quickly.

These findings agree with a study by Boutcher and Trenske who observed greater feelings of enjoyment in subjects who listened to music while exercising.

1 Harte and Eifert also found that exercise enjoyment rose significantly as external stimulation increased external attention focus.

2 Subjects also felt less anxious, less depressed, less angry and hostile, and more invigorated following an outdoor run than when running indoors. Hormonal markers of stress (norepinephrine and cortisol) were also significantly lower following the outdoor run.

“The premier club management systems developers,” according to Ivey, “continually assess the marketplace, reviewing their customers’ requirements and suggestions, to provide new features and capabilities.”

One key area of concern for clubs, says Ivey, is overhead costs: “New methodologies, such as [the use of an] ASP, reduce up-front overhead costs, maintenance, database errors and corruption due to network problems.

It also reduces space and power requirements [because]there is no need to have desks and computers all over the office.

Club operators can acquire only the terminals necessary to perform specific job functions, such as front desk, sales and back office.

These systems also provide instant membership recognition, with the ability to check-in and be recognized anywhere the member has access. This gives multi-club operators the ability to offer multi-club access to clubs all over the world.”

Another area of concern for clubs, Ivey continues, is staff time, which technology can reduce: “Some services provide members access to club scheduling information and other management features that would normally take time away from staff members.

[These can be used] to schedule such things as courts, classes and special services like massage and physical therapy.”

Other areas where technology can help to save staff time is information updates, “such as member address changes, billing information and account reconciliation, [which can all be changed] by the members themselves, without using club resources such as personnel and computers,” says Ivey.

New methods of clubaccess are also available, “allowing club owners to benefit [through] increased security, better member control, and increased ability to provide after-hour access and nearly unstaffed entry at all times,” Ivey says.

For the FISA survey, one of the goals is to “shine a light on whether [technology] investments that clubs are making are paying off,” says Dinerman. That way, FISA members can “develop a baseline for where this business is as far as technology, and work together to satisfy the needs of the market.”

It has been proven beyond serious doubt that screening for CRC or colorectal cancer, the 2nd leading reason of cancer death in the US, lowers the death rate from this disease. A new study in the Nov. 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine supports the simple technique of testing stool for occult blood as a means of reducing the occurrence of new CRC cases.

The new study, written by a group from the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Colon Cancer Control Study, shows that fecal occult-blood tests (FOBT), whether performed yearly or biennially (every other year), significantly reduced the subsequent diagnosis of CRC. The authors followed more than 46,000 people for a period of about 18 years. The study patients were randomly divided into three equal groups: annual FOBT screening, biennial screening, or regular care (meaning that no strict requirement for any screening was done and the decision was left entirely up to the individual and his or her physician). The groups were well matched at the outset of the study, and the subsequent development of CRC was carefully followed.

The study found that the two screened groups had an almost 20 percent lower rate of CRC than the group under regular care. Furthermore, the authors noted that this reduction was likely a significant underestimate of the real benefit of FOBT screening, since not all the study patients actually went through with the recommended screening, while at least some of the control group did have screening.

The authors’ conclusion: “The use of either annual or biennial FOBT significantly reduces the incidence of CRC. Our study supports the theory of the adenoma [polyp]-carcinoma [cancer] sequence and emphasizes the importance of detecting and resecting [removing] advanced adenomas.”

An editorial in the same issue of the New England Journal of Medicine calls for more screening of Americans, without rigid adherence to any particular type of testing.

CRC screening can be done using a variety of different methods, including fecal occult-blood tests, which can be done yearly or less often; sigmoidoscopy, which involves inserting a tube rectally to visually examine the last 2 feet of bowel; barium enema, an X-ray test which allows evaluation of the entire colon; and colonoscopy, in which a specialist passes a 5-foot long tube to visually inspect the entire length of the colon (this is done under light anesthesia). The simplest and least expensive of the screening techniques is the FOBT, which entails smearing several stool specimens on a special card, which is then sent to the physician’s office for testing. If positive, further testing by another method is required.

The demonstrated reduction in death rate from CRC after any of these screening methods is almost certainly due to the removal of malignant (cancerous) and premalignant adenomas (polyps) discovered as a result of screening. While an added benefit of colonoscopic screening is that such growths can be removed during the screening procedure itself, some patients avoid this test because of the required cathartic preparation, as well as its expense.

We understand from experience that rapid ejaculation may destroy a relationship, but there are strong and effective premature ejaculation pills in our time! PE also known as Rapid ejaculation is the most prevalent form of sex dysfunction in men younger than 30 years.

lMany clubs fail to realize the importance of image when designing their printed aerobics schedule. Once a copy of the schedule leaves the building, it’s out there for the world to see. Whether a member drops it in a parking lot or passes it on to friends, you can be assured that many people other than members look at your schedule of classes.

A schedule looks best when it is professionally printed. The impression it makes far exceeds those that are handwritten or typed. If your budget is tight, it may be possible to trade a free membership for a printer’s services, or allow the printer free advertising on the club’s premises.

A number of elements should be included in your schedule:

* A statement reflecting your goals for customer satisfaction, or a business philosophy.

* The dates and times each class is offered.

* The names of the instructors.

* A brief description of each type of class and whether it is best suited for beginner, intermediate or advanced students.

* Childcare hours.

* Announcements of special events and promotions.

* Facility hours.

Creative class names can add some flash to your aerobics schedule and set it apart from your competitors’. Instead of calling a class “Hi-Lo Aerobics,” why not call it “Cardio Jam” or “Aerobic Blast”? A toning class could be called “Firm Action,” and a beginner step class might be “Steppin’ Easy.”

By conjuring up visual images of fun for your classes through active class names, you will be more likely to entice your members into giving the class a try.

Use your schedule as an advertising tool. Many local businesses will allow you to leave a small stack of them in common areas, and some schools will allow you to post one on their bulletin boards. Always take a stack of them with you to hand out at special, offsite promotions.

Propecia will treat your hair loss: Propecia is a physician-prescribed medication that has garnered FDA approval. Propecia is a widely used medication that reduces mild to moderate male pattern baldness, especially at the top and middle of the scalp. Smaller amounts of this medication have been effective at treating prostatic hyperplasia, while it is used in larger amounts for patients with prostate cancer. Numerous clinical studies show that most men who take Propecia stop losing their hair while some even enjoy renewed hair growth. But how well it works depends on how serious each case is; not everyone regrows all of their lost hair.

Is Propecia really as good as the hype?

Propecia is sold as a pill containing one milligram of the active ingredient finasteride. A number of tests have been conducted showing the rewards gained by Propecia use. The majority of men who use Propecia report the cessation of hair loss and/or new hair growth. In order for the drug to effectively provide these results, it must be taken daily for three to six months. And it is necessary to stay with the course if you wish to keep your re-grown hair.

What makes Propecia effective?

One of the most common causes of male pattern baldness, more formally known as androgenetic alopecia, is too much DHT present in their scalp. DHT reduces hair follicles to being totally invisible. Propecia works to suppress the manufacture of DHT and thereby lower its levels in the body. Consequently, additional shrinkage of the hair follicles that are impacted is avoided. A drug initially used to combat prostate cancer, Finasteride is the chief ingredient in Propecia. The medication is usually prescribed in doses of 5mg and is especially effective in countering hair loss at the crown of the head.

In terms of Propecia use, what is the best dose and frequency?

It is not harmful to take Propecia once a day. Rather than instructing patients to take the drug as recommended by the manufacturer, doctors suggest taking half of a tablet in addition to a whole tablet. Studies indicate this medication works best if taken one time daily. In addition, the half life for this medication is in the range of 5-6 hours. So if you miss one dose, Propecia stops working.

We always recommend you discuss your issues with a physician.

How easy is it to get Propecia?

Since Propecia requires a prescription, first see your physician to buy Propecia online. Some dependable sites exist which adhere to professional and ethical standards in selling Propecia without prescription.

What is the downside to using Propecia?

All medications have some side effects, but the majority of people using Propecia, which is the only drug of its type that has FDA approval, report few problems when taking it. In clinical trials, subjects did end up with negative symptoms such as reduced levels of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, or decreased quantities of semen. The adverse reactions went away immediately upon the users giving up the drug. Pregnant women should not touch it: When cracked or crushed, a Propecia tablet will expose its active ingredient, which can cause problems in the fetal development of male sex organs.

Murder on Harbor Boulevard was designed to promote balanced physical activity. Because detectives were unable to get additional clues by spending extra hours on the treadmill or pumping iron, there was no incentive to overtrain. This encouraged members to space out their workouts and plan ahead rather than doing too much in a single exercise session. At the same time, the program motivated runners to include strength training in their exercise program and got some weightlifters to add aerobics to their weekly training regimen. The end result was a 24 percent increase in facility utilization during the six-week event.

At the conclusion of the murder mystery, detectives gathered for a Murder Revealing Luncheon. Staff members put on a hysterical reproduction of the six different murder scenarios, all ending with the phrase, “the intern clutched her dumbbells and fell to her death on the exercise floor.” Prizes were also awarded. The luncheon allowed members to celebrate their exercise accomplishments while spending time with their colleagues and the staff of the Health & Fitness Exchange.

Response to Murder on Harbor Boulevard was very positive. Members reported in a post-event survey that the mystery broke up the monotony of just working out and made training more enjoyable. During peak workout hours, all 15 strength-training machines and 36 pieces of cardiovascular equipment were fully utilized. Participation in the group-exercise classes also increased throughout the day, in many cases doubling in size. This remained the case even during the summer months, when class participation usually declines.

There was an increase in the number of telephone calls and visits by non-members as well, which led to a rise in total membership during the three months following the event.

The murder mystery even boosted member involvement in the facility’s strength-training programs, which previously had been less of a priority for them. This will have the long-term effect of increasing the muscular strength and endurance of members.

“Our murder mystery was created to promote a well-rounded exercise program,” notes health and fitness specialist Jessica Stevens. “It challenged participants in a fun, game-like manner. The clues that were distributed enabled participants to take small, stress-relieving breaks from their busy work schedules and focus on something silly and fun. By providing an exciting twist on exercise, members looked forward to making fitness an enjoyable part of their day.” Murder on Harbor Boulevard, therefore, helped form healthy new patterns of exercise that will hopefully endure well into the future. It proves that pushing the creative envelope in program design can reap large rewards in facility utilization, exercise adherence and member satisfaction.
