More Room to Reflect
John Mayer, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of New Hampshire and expert in emotional intelligence, said that as people age they gain more mental space to reflect on and understand their emotional lives.

“As you grow older, you gain expert knowledge of your own emotions,” Mayer said. “You become more aware of what you feel and how to express it.”

Researchers in the study attribute this emotional poignancy not only to life experience, but also to what Carstensen calls the human ability to monitor time subconsciously.

“Older people know they don’t have the time ahead of them they once had,” she said, “so they prefer to find emotional significance that gives them immediate satisfaction in their day-to-day lives. They literally learn to live for the moment.”

Whether it’s pleasure or joy, sadness or pain, the knowledge that an experience will soon end changes the emotional experience itself, according to the psychologists’ report.

Life goals change with age, too. While young people pursue things that promise future benefit, such as learning new trades, meeting new people and moving to new cities, seniors tend to seek emotional relevance in the established facets of their lives. And surprisingly, achieving happiness is not their chief goal.

“Age does not entail the relentless pursuit of happiness, but rather the satisfaction of emotionally meaningful goals,” the report said. And this pursuit “entails far more than simply feeling good. Finding meaning in relationships, even conflicting ones, emerges as a central task in later life.”

Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, older people are less likely to think about death, Carstensen says.

“At some point you accept, both consciously and subconsciously, that you are not going to live forever,” she said. “In fact, many older people stop thinking about death altogether. Instead they choose to find new meaning in their lives.”

Sage or Crank?
But if emotional maturity sets in with age, why are seniors as often perceived as compassionate sages as they are cantankerous grouches?

“Just because they have a greater sensitivity to their emotions, doesn’t mean older people always choose to embrace positive feelings,” Mayer said. “There’s no question some people fall off the track and become fixed in a negative outlook.”

Carstensen says the two perceived models of old age — the sage and the crank –mostly stem from young adults’ limited exposure to older generations.

“Most people base their ideas of seniors on their grandparents,” she said. “If your grandparents were wise and reflective, that will likely be your model of all older people. Of course, the opposite is also true.”

Carstensen says her study will continue over the next several years. She and her team plan to reassemble the same 184 people for a second experiment. She hopes to show more evidence of the link between emotional maturity and age, as the same participants record their emotions again over the course of a week.

In the end, regardless of age, experts agree that emotional development is critical to contentment in life. While most people rely on achieving career or other “knowledge”-based goals for happiness, it’s human relationships and “emotion”-based goals that have the longest-lasting effects.

According to Carstensen, “successful regulation of emotion is central to functioning in interpersonal relationships, coping with life’s hardships, and optimizing mental health.”

So, take comfort: Whether you’re an emotional seedling or giant redwood, your emotions will only grow clearer, deeper and better with age.

Below are the 19 emotions monitored in the study: fear, irritation, boredom, disgust, accomplishment, joy, pride, sadness, embarrassment, guilt, anger, happiness, frustration, boredom, contentment, amusement, anxiety, shame, interest, excitement.

Fine wine and blue jeans aren’t the only things that get better with age. A new study says your emotional maturity also flourishes as time goes by.

Though your motions may slow down as you get older, your emotions rev up to new levels of complexity and intensity. That’s what psychologists discovered when they tracked the emotional highs and lows of 184 adults, ranging from age 18 to 94 years old, for a week.

The study found that while people over age 65 generally feel the same number of positive emotions as younger adults, they experience far fewer negative feelings. Moreover, seniors know how to bounce back from negative emotions faster than younger people do.

“We discovered that older adults experience a richness of emotions unlike anyone else,” said Laura L. Carstensen, Ph.D., vice chair of Department of Psychology at Stanford University in California and leader of the experiment. “An older person, for example, can feel intense satisfaction and sadness at the same time.”

On the other hand, she says, a typical 18-year-old can only feel overall positive or negative feelings at once.

Participants in the study were given stacks of “emotion response sheets” and asked to mark down how intensely they felt 19 different emotions on a scale from 1 to 7. The researchers gave the group pagers, and instructed them to fill out an emotional response sheet every time they were paged. They were paged randomly five times a day over a week. The study was published in the October 2000 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

At the end of the experiment, Carstensen and her colleagues had 665 emotional data points on each participant, with which they could assess “the frequency, intensity and complexity of emotional experiences in their every day lives,” according to the study. Most noticeably, people over age 65 ascribed more middle numbers to their emotions, while young adults generally ranked each one either at the highest or lowest end.

“Our older participants showed a higher self-knowledge, or poignancy, about their emotions,” Carstensen said. “While young people tended to describe a particular emotion as either on or off.”

When we have noticeable signs of aging, it comes to mind that there is something we can do to make it happen slower. Some companies and products advertise false claims, telling you that they can reverse the effects of aging.

It should be encouraging to know that products that contain HGH can help slow down the effects of aging. Human Growth Hormone normally exists in our body and it enhances growth and the production of new cells, and it assists with body tissue maintenance in our lifetime. In the recent few years, clinical tests have confirmed that HGH can help reverse some of the effects of aging. HGH products will give you skin that appears more youthful and radiant, by supporting good functioning of the body and helping reverse the signs of the aging process.

Not only can HGH products improve your outward appearance, but there are many health benefits to using this. Products that contain HGH can be beneficial in improving thyroid gland functioning, which declines with the aging process. The functioning of the thymus gland benefits from HGH products, with a boost to the immune system through optimal health of this gland to give us a chance at a healthier life.

Bone loss is slowed down by the use of HGH product as well, which is beneficial to those of us who are aging. You can lower the amount of bone density you lose by taking a supplement of HGH, and reduce your odds of experiencing fractures. Be sure to seek proper medical care when needed, in addition to using HGH products.
