Can I Exercise Above my Target Heartbeat Range?

Are there risks associated with exercising above your target heartbeat range — in the range of 80 percent to 90 percent of maximum?

You first need to be cleared by your physician and have a maximal stress test to make sure you don’t have any heart irregularities during heavy exertion. If you have been, it is probably OK to exercise at this level.

If you are in poor shape or have certain risk factors, such as smoking and hypertension, it is not advisable to exercise at that high of a level.

Training at that level may present health problems that would not occur at a lower intensity. Another practical point is that it can be uncomfortable to exercise at that level.

I would recommend training at that high a level to athletes only.
